Traversals, answered

What is a traversal?

A traversal (travessa in Catalan, travesía in Spanish) is a multi-day walk linking refuges, villages or campsites, so you sleep along the way instead of returning to the start. Some are loops, like Carros de Foc; others cross a whole range, like the GR 11 across the Pyrenees.

What does the T grade mean?

It is the SAC hiking scale. T1 is a clear path; T2 and T3 are mountain paths with steeper or exposed sections; T4 to T6 are alpine terrain where you use your hands and need experience. A traversal's grade is its typical terrain; its crux can be harder.

Do I need to book the refuges?

In summer, yes: popular refuges fill up weeks ahead, and several traversals have their own booking service. Each traversal page lists the refuges along the way.

Can I track the traversals I walk?

Yes. Cims is a free app where you log each stage as you walk it, verify it with your photos and follow your progress and the walkers ahead of you, alongside the peaks you summit.
